Individuals with health problems/disabilities may be able to do education courses full time or part time and keep their benefits. This includes Housing and Council Tax benefit. They are responsible for all applications for financial assistance, including individuals with a disability. From September 2004 students can claim a Higher Education Fund which is administrated via the LEA. This is means tested but can be worth up to £1,000 per annum. Individuals can approach the college or university they wish to study at for further financial assistance. They may decide you meet criteria for the Access to Learning Fund which as replaced hardship funds. You will need to contact the Student Services Department. Each place of learning also as a Disability Adviser who you can speak to if you wish. It is not necessary at any time to disclose any disability/health problem but you may receive more support including financially.
